Once the New Year begins, the next thing that everyone in South India looks forward to is Pongal! Some of us may call it pongal, whereas for others it is Lohri and for some, it is Sankranti. No matter what, this is a time of festive celebration and should aptly be celebrated accordingly. Here are 10-time tested recipes from Premier to make your Pongal a little sweeter, tastier and more fun. All these dishes will only take you twenty or thirty minutes to prepare. 1. Chakara Pongal:
To most people across India, the word ‘Ponga’ is synonymous with sweet pongal or chakara pongal. Making this delectable sweet is very easy. All you need to do is cook one portion of moong daal with three portions of rice in your Premier Appy Trendy Black Induction Bottom Inner Lid Pressure Cooker. Ensure that the rice is a little soggy.
Add in a dash of milk and jaggery syrup and let the rice and dal mixture simmer in this syrup for a few minutes. Meanwhile, fry some cashew nuts in ghee and add it to the pongal. Viola! Wasn’t that simple!
4. Peanut Chutney:
Another dish that you can make this pongal, to go with your pongal and other dishes is the peanut chutney. Dry roast some peanuts with salt in your Premier Non Stick Kadai with Stainless Steel lid. 3. Gothsu / Thakkali Kozambu:
Venn pongal is very versatile and goes with a wide range of dishes. But the one dish that stands out is the Gothsu. TO make this, you need to finely chop onions and chilli and saute them in oil for a few minutes. Add turmeric, salt, a little tamarind and some sambar powder. If you like your gravies runny, add some water to it. Bring it to a boil, and then let it cook on sim for about 10 minutes. Once the raw smell of tomato wears off, you can serve the gotsu.
2. Venn Pongal:
The next most popular dish is the slightly less popular, but nonetheless loved savoury pongal or venn pongal. The preparation of this dish is very similar to the chakara pongal. 5. Kuzhi Paniyaram:
Another dish that goes really well with sambar, chutney and most south Indian side dishes is kuzhi paniyaram. To make kuzhi paniyaram you need dosa batter. ALternatively, you can prepare an instant batter using rava and buttermilk. Cut some onions and chilli and add it to the batter. 6. Paruppu Payasam:

If you like your food a little extra sweet, then add some sugar. You can replace milk (either in part or in whole) with some coconut milk or cream. You can even add some roasted almonds to the payasam.
7. Vadai:
What is any celebration without everyone’s favourite! The one and only Vadai! Soak chana dal and coarsely grind it with some chilli. Then, add chopped onions and make flat patties. 8. Masala Dosa:
We are sure that you know how to prepare dosa batter. Now it is time to learn how you can prepare the filling. Pressure cook some potatoes in a pressure cooker. Remove the peels and set them aside. Fry some onion and chilli in your Premier non-stick kadai and add the boiled potatoes to it.

9. Paal Poli:
Make puris using either wheat flour or maida. You can add a dash of sugar to the doubt if you desire. Then to make the milk sauce, boil milk and once it thickens add some sugar, jaggery and cardamom to it. Soak the puris in this milk mixture.

10. Tamarind Rice:
Now that you have had a huge feast, it is time to start with some tamarind rice. Temper some mustard, chilli and curry leaves. Take 50gms of tamarind in bowl, add cups of hot water and soak it for 40 minutes. Squeeze the tamarind and pulp leaving with just the water. For the tamarind recipe masala, take 1 tsp urad dal, ½ tsp sesame seeds, ¼ tsp methi seeds, ¼ tsp black pepper, 1 tsp chana dal, 2 tsp coriander seeds and 3-4 dry chillies. Add ¼ teaspoon asafoetida/hing to the mixture.
